Over the past two decades, China has become the world's leading gold market. As both the largest gold consumer and producer in the world, China plays a key role in the global gold market. But to many, the ancient eastern country's gold market remains a mystery.
China’s Jewellery Market 2019
As a result of the economic slowdown in China in recent years, demand for jewellery has declined. According to the National Bureau of Statistics, jewellery retail sales from businesses above a certain designated scale amounted to RMB319 billion in 2018, up 7.4% from the previous year. It seems, however, that many investors have switched their focus from gold jewellery to gold bars.

This report focuses on China's gold investment and trading markets. The nation's jewellery and technology markets are robust and, as such, are out of the scope of this paper. But China's investment and trading markets would benefit from strategic guidance and developing them will support the internationalisation of the renminbi.

China's jewellery market - quietly improving
The 2005-2013 boom in Chinese gold jewellery demand was followed by a fallow few years, which saw demand shrink by one third. But there are green shoots of recovery emerging. 2017 saw modest growth, aided by industry efforts to better engage with modern consumers. And continued innovation by the trade could bear fruit over the coming years.
